ID: Final Design Rationale

The overall style of the Women’s Club is the combination of Art based on Gender Inequality and Japanese Zen Vibes. I wanted women to be calm yet feel empowered however, I did not know how to go about it at first until I realised that each room has a purpose and a kind of feeling.

Libraries are usually either very old or very new looking. I wanted the library to look timeless. Something people can never get tired of seeing the seasons change. One on the seasons that makes people emotional is the autumn season. I have been to a Japanese temple at Kyoto in Autumn and it feels serene and peaceful. In that environment alone, I wanted to be alone and read in nature, making it as comfortable as possible, like jumping on a pile of leaves. That is why I put a trampoline looking hammock with lots of bean bags and stuffed toys. I want to recreate that feeling when I was in Japan so I used a lot of wooden materials in there to represent the trees. The colours surrounding the library are autumn colours from the fallen leaves. I incorporated some textures like a velvet wall to bring some warmth and depth to the room. I made a collective decision not to put books inside the library but outside of it because too many books put pressure on people to read it all. Focusing on one book is better that being distracted with all the unread books. With that, I utilised the bookshelf area into being, the design, an artwork if you will.

The Living Room has a different vibe compared to the library. It follows more along the lines of art on gender inequality. I was more so inspired by Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe pop art. Although Warhol was not eco friendly in mass production, Marilyn Monroe was a strong, powerful woman. Instead of focusing on artworks of gender inequality and putting it into different parts of the room, I wanted the living room itself to be an artwork as well as be equally sustainable. Marilyn Monroe was a woman who had a hard life as a woman. She was sexually assaulted and harassed by her mother who was mentally unstable. She rose to stardom despite all she had endured in the past and is still remembered greatly. With Marilyn Monroe, I wanted to use the colour pink for the room. People either hate or love pink. There is no in between. This is mainly because pink is associated as a feminine colour. The social stigma of girls liking the colour pink is quite often frowned upon because it makes a woman too girly. I want to prove that girls can like pink and should not be unapologetic to themselves. Marilyn Monroe is like the colour pink. Everyone remembers her as a sex icon but not as a strong woman, actress and survivor of sexual abuse. Like the colour pink, people choose to say she was just a sex icon instead of unravelling who she was as a person and what she overcame. I chose different tones of pink to give the living room some depth. The usage of marble brings out the pink and balances the room. While knowing that marble is not sustainable due to it’s high energy manufacturing, it can be recycled. Malaysia is a mineral rich country which contains lots of marble back in the day. This is why, in lots of old houses, marble can be seen on the floor. Marble is a stone which can be reused. With that, it adds a hint of sophistication to the living room. Glass is incorporated in the room so it does not feel too trapped or tight since glass is transparent.

Often at times, restrooms are too plain and monotonous which is why I wanted to create something fun yet demure. Privacy is needed in a restroom, even among girls. So, additional walls are added into the toilet because I believe everyone has a right to their own body. They should feel comfortable with it. I wanted to give the toilet a pop of colour. In contrast to the pink room, I felt like a blue room would remind the women that they could be what they want to be even if they want to be a bit masculine or not be labelled at all. Privacy was the main concern in designing the restroom.

The dining room is a place where people gather together, eat and converse. This is why I did not feel obliged to put a TV there. I added the colour red as it invokes hunger. Not to mention, red is a sexy colour which could really empower women. Women believe that red is too strong a colour when deep down, they are strong too. The room is a mixture of a cafe, a bar and a restaurant because different girls have different intentions to start up a conversation. Everyone knows people will open up with alcohol in their system. The room should feel comfortable and be well suited to what they want to talk about. I wanted to create something like a mini bar in a bar house because memories are often made at bars when people talk it out together. That was the feeling I wanted them to have.

I wanted the rooms to tell a different story so women could try to be empowered while they try to find a peace of mind too. Women need to feel good about themselves rather than taking care of other people once in a while. Self love is the most important love to give yourself and women should realise that rather than be taken advantage of.

ID Week 10:Finishing Unfinished Work.

Once I finished the Final Outcomes, I had a little time to breathe and rest however, as I took the time to rest and enjoy my hobbies for a while, I realised that I wanted to do more. Staying in my house and doing work has made me more productive as it gave me a sense of urgency which then turned into me being motivated to do more work.

There are only a few days till the submission of this project so I took my time with things and did them carefully. I did some artist research as I felt that it was needed to clarify why I did this a theme like this. Not only that, I went over some things that felt like it needed more work, for instance, my development which needed more work and improvement from the previous drawings.

There were also a matter of updating my blogs until everything is up to completion. I found this whole project therapeutic in a sense where it helped me cope with being under quarantine no matter how much I complained or how hard it actually was. I am also glad that I finally got my time management back and that I am back on schedule and I finished the project despite me not being able to do much from the comforts of my home.

ID Week 9: Creating the Final Outcomes.

Despite me being unable to finish my research and my development, I had enough material to see myself through.

My SketchUp trial period was finished which caused me not to be able to create my final outcomes however, it did give me enough time to think about what I wanted the whole design to be like. So when I finally got SketchUp, I started working on the floor plan first. With the extra time I had left, I took my time carefully setting up the floor plan while looking at the Neufert book for data as I carefully laid the furniture and made sure everything was in the right measurements.

It took me one whole day to make the floor plan because I found it quite enjoyable. Struggling in the last project with using the software and learning from it made me become better. It made me realise that I work well under stress and later on I would find it enjoyable. Being stressed about using this software has made me remember how to use it from both muscle memory and actually knowing how to use it. I used the drawing tool to draw and the keyboard to take the measurements down. With everything drawn, I used the Warehouse for 2D floor plan symbols. I made sure they were measured before putting it into the floor plan because I did not want any mishaps and miscalculations to happen which it did not. Once I did this all on SketchUp, I sent it to LayOut to get the accurate measurements of the interior and put in the keys of the furniture that was unclear. I made sure to save a copy for the Lighthing Plan so that I would have a backup if I needed it.

Once that was done, I then moved onto making the model. I took longer compared to the last project because I had many rooms to deal with compared to the Cafe-Restaurant. I would say that the more time I invested on this model, the more I could play around and see what was wrong instead of rushing it. The model took me 4 days to make which means I took one day for one room. I liked that I took my time with it because I could see what I liked and what I didn’t like. While I was making the model, I was happy that I took my time to do the experiments because it the room looked a bit cramped in the model. With the glass and the play of colours, it did not look very cramped at all. In fact, it looked quite spacious. In addition to finishing the model, I then proceeded to take screenshots (some with 2 point perspectives) of the model so that it could be put up on the blog. The model was quite hard to make considering the fact that my laptop kept crashing and lagging. I was lucky enough that my laptop did not die on me while working on this.

Next, I did the lighting plan. I had forgotten to do the lighting plan so, I went onto YouTube to watch a few videos as to how to do it. Unfortunately, I still did not how to do it. In the end I Googled Lighting Plan and to my joy, it was what I needed. From a first glance, I knew what I needed to do and I remembered what I learnt in class. First, I sent the plan to Layout and removed my furniture in the Women’s Club. After that, I proceeded to draw the symbols of the lights and switches. I figured out the tool needed to portray the wires which helped me a lot. I wanted there to be lots of light because, safety is an obvious issue. With more lights, they can feel safer.

Everything was done except the elevations. I remembered how to do the elevations but I had forgotten how to change the colour of the background. It took me a while before I figured out I had to tick off the section planes so that the grey colour would not be visible when I sent it to LayOut.

Overall, I am glad that I took things more seriously in this project and sped things up so that I could spend more time into building this model. I had more thought and decision into making this final outcome which was great. I had many frustrations over using SketchUp which is why this has motivated me to use other softwares like Rhino and AutoCad. I will learn it over the quarantine period and make use of my time after the hand in as I still have much work to be done.
